Aggregate Size Guide
Choose the right size and quantity for a perfect finish every time
Understanding Aggregate Sizes
The size of your aggregate affects both the look and functionality of your project. Here's our comprehensive guide to help you choose the perfect product.
Small / Fine Aggregate
Ideal for detailed work and smaller areas. Creates a neat, compact finish that's comfortable to walk on. Perfect for filling gaps between stepping stones or topping plant pots.
Medium Aggregate
The most versatile size, suitable for nearly any project. Provides excellent ground coverage and a professional finish for gardens, pathways, and driveways alike.
Large Aggregate
Makes a bold visual statement. Excellent for driveways and large garden areas where a chunkier finish is desired. Also great for drainage applications.
Cobbles & Feature Stone
Perfect for creating stunning feature areas and decorative borders. These larger stones add real character and texture to gardens and landscaped spaces.
How Much Do I Need?
Use this simple formula to calculate the right amount for your project:
Measure Your Area
Measure the length and width in metres, then multiply them together to get your area in m².
Choose Your Depth
For decorative use, 40–50mm is standard. Driveways may need 50mm+ for durability.
Calculate Weight
Multiply your area by the coverage rate for your chosen aggregate size (see cards above).
Add 10% Extra
Always add 10% to account for settling, uneven ground, and natural compaction over time.
Helpful Tips
Use a Weed Membrane
Always lay a quality weed prevention membrane before spreading aggregate. This stops weeds growing through and keeps your finish looking pristine for years.
Edge Your Area
Install edging before laying aggregate to keep stones contained and create clean, defined borders. This prevents spreading and maintains your design.
Compact Your Base
Ensure the ground is level and compacted before laying aggregate, especially for driveways. A solid sub-base prevents sinking and uneven surfaces.
Order Samples First
If you're unsure about colour or texture, order a sample bag first. Natural stone can vary from photos, so seeing it in person ensures you're happy with your choice.
